Sports Premium Funding 2017-2018

The government provided additional funding of £150 million starting in the academic year 2015/2016 to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding – provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport – is allocated to primary school Headteachers.

Schools must spend this additional funding on improving the provision of PE and sport, but have been given the freedom to choose how they choose to develop or add to the sport activities the school offers and to make improvements that will benefit pupils in the future.

At Cromwell Academy we have used our Sports Premium Funding in a way that we hope will have the largest impact upon our pupils and teachers. This year, and in past years, we have utilised our funding to buy in specialist qualified sports coaches to lead PE sessions for children in Years 1 to Year 6. These sports coaches work alongside our teaching staff, offering valuable professional development and training for our teaching staff in all aspects of the PE curriculum (invasion games, net and wall games, athletics, gymnastics and dance) whilst offering our pupils highly engaging and active PE lessons twice a week. They also run after school clubs, to further pupil's physical development and to give pupils a chance to try a range of activities.

Impact of Sports Premium Funding - 2016-2017

The Governors are committed to ensuring that the Sports Premium funding has a measurable and lasting impact on the quality of PE at Cromwell Academy. Ofsted 2017 also stated that "School leaders use the sports premium well to provide a good range of physical activities."

We continue to monitor the teaching staff’s evaluation and lesson observations of PE, this enables the teaching staff to have the opportunity to teach PE to a high standard. It has already been reported to us that there is an increase in pupils participating in a wider range of activities including organised lunchtime activities, after school clubs and clubs within the community. The clubs help to promote health and fitness alongside allowing the children to show what they are good at, earning trophies and wrist bands which they love to show in class.
